ANIMAL TRACKS

Can you identify the tracks of the chamois and wood grouse? Which pads and claws belong to which animals?

For every one of us, experiencing nature is a core element of mountain sports. But typically we can name mountain summits by the dozen, while we struggle with things that are much more obvious. Taking the time on a tour to read tracks can be so exciting and illuminating. (Fährten nennt man übrigens die Trittsiegel von Wild, Spuren die von kleineren Tieren und bei Vögeln spricht man von Geläufen).

It means you can not only identify the animal – the track on the ground can also tell you about the gait, activity and behavior of the animal. When does the fox start trotting? Which bird are the feathers from? Which animal left tracks on the tree and why?

NOTE: Never follow the tracks of wild animals in the winter months – respect their quiet zones!

THE FOLLOWING APPS WILL HELP YOU IDENTIFY TRACKS:

iTrack Wildlife Pro ($14.99 for Apple users) and iTrack Wildlife ($14.99 for Android users) can be used to identify 74 species from pugmarks, nests, scat, noises, etc. -> But you can also visit a local outdoor retailer to pick up a regional animal track guidebook!

The BirdNet research project comes from combined efforts of Cornell University in America and Chemnitz University of Technology in German. It is the easiest way to identify birds by sound  APPLE / ANDROID
