WILDERNESS SKI TOUR in the karwendel mountains
SKI LOCAL WITH HENDRIK
For ORTOVOX employee Hendrik Reschke, the wild, rugged Karwendel mountains represent home. The Karwendel massif sits between Bavaria and the Tyrol, a vast expanse of rock with rugged flanks, magnificent vistas and awe-inspiring rock faces. Hendrik will take you on a ski tour to the GRUBENKARSPITZE – a long, energy-sapping but utterly rewarding tour.
“FOR ME, HOME IS THE FEELING OF BELONGING AND FAMILIARITY.”
(HENDRIK RESCHKE)
BIKE AND SKI TOUR TO THE GRUBENKARSPITZE
The Karwendel massif is still in semi-darkness when Hendrik and mountain guide Tobi set off. With skis attached to their backpacks, the pair cover the first 18 kilometers to the Rossloch by bike. It is true that many parts of their native alps are overrun with people. But here, deep in the Karwendel, an area undeveloped by roads and ski lifts, it could hardly be quieter.
The Rossloch is the highest point in the Hinterau valley. Surrounded by imposing summits, it is in shadow for almost the entire winter – and therefore provides countless opportunities for ski touring. Here, at the head of the valley, Hendrik and Tobi attach their skins and set off towards the plateau and beyond into the giant cirque to the south of the Grubenkarspitze.
SOLITUDE, RUGGEDNESS, EXPANSE
Having arrived at the summit of the Grubenkarspitze, the view stretches back towards the Hinterau valley. On the other side, the rough north faces drop down steeply. Their timing is perfect: The sun is slowly turning the hard snowpack into perfect corn snow. The two ORTOVOX colleagues begin the descent, leaving their tracks in the snow. Total solitude, rugged mountains and the expanse of the Karwendel: That’s what home is all about.
