Training on firn, rock and scree - basis for safe mountaineering

Do you dream of moving safely and confidently in the mountains, away from marked trails? The SAFETY ACADEMY course, MOUNTAINEERING Basic, is your introduction to the world of independent alpinism. The course aims to teach you the basic techniques and ways to travel that you’ll need for your alpine adventures. You will develop a sound understanding of alpine hazards, learn to recognize risks early on and act appropriately in any given situation. The safe handling of your equipment is a key component – from choosing the right materials to essential knot techniques to keep you safe in all situations.

Details Mountaineering basic

Through practical training, we focus on improving your walking technique and efficient movement in challenging terrain. Content includes ascending and descending pathless terrain, elementary climbing techniques, walking on paths secured with wire rope, braking falls in firn, tour planning, material science, knot techniques and nature conservation. In addition, you will receive an introduction to rock climbing and learn how to safely navigate simple climbing passages in hiking boots – including basic belay techniques for exposed passages. Therefore, the SAFETY ACADEMY course offers the ideal foundation for independent alpine tours and the safe navigation of challenging alpine trails.

Course requirements:

  • Basic physical fitness and sure-footedness
  • No previous alpine experience necessary
  • Motivation to move independently and safely through alpine terrain
  • Head for heights

Course content:

  • Footwork on steep snow and ice
  • Climbing and belaying techniques in alpine terrain
  • Climbing in mountain boots
  • Risk assessment of alpine hazards
  • Rope guidance and walking on challenging passages
  • Using fixed anchor points
  • Belay anchor construction and rappelling
  • Tour planning
  • If and where possible: Firn training (using an ice axe, walking techniques, arrest techniques)

Course goals:

  • Moving safely and independently through alpine terrain
  • Recognizing and assessing alpine risks and dangers
  • Introduction to basic climbing and belay techniques
  • Competent use of knots and alpine equipment
  • Preparation for independent alpine tours and via ferrata climbs
