An allrounder for the mountains

Versatile, functional and comfortable year-round mountain backpack

Highlights

  • Optimal load distribution
  • Comfortable, well-ventilated back system
  • Robust and sustainable with recycled polyamide

TRAVERSE backpacks are made for use all year round on summits great and small, although the TRAVERSE 30 is best suited to longer single-day and multi-day tours.

A well-ventilated back system and good load distribution are especially essential in a backpack. Thanks to the ribbed, webbed material and perforated foam in the back pads, the Comfort Contact back system provides excellent air circulation and improved comfort. Ergonomically shaped shoulder straps and a broad hip belt distribute weight evenly across the body.

Even when it comes to technical features, the TRAVERSE 30 has plenty to offer: its main compartment has several sections with enough room for your equipment, while smaller objects can be quickly stowed away in the slot compartment on the front. Your drink bottles will always be close at hand in the elastic side pockets. An integrated helmet net, hiking pole fastening, and stowable material loops at the end of the shoulder straps make the TRAVERSE 30 the optimal companion for alpine terrain. Additional features such as hydration system compatibility, rain cover, hip pocket and holders for items such as sunglasses on the shoulder strap round off this versatile backpack. In the interests of sustainability, 72% of the outer material is now made of recycled polyamide, making the TRAVERSE 30 extremely robust, with the smallest possible ecological footprint. The TRAVERSE 30 is thus the perfect companion for mountain adventures in summer and winter.

I bought the Traverse for hiking - but so far I've been using the backpack for jogging to and from work. Unexpectedly (that's not actually the backpack's intended purpose), it works wonderfully. You can fit everything in it, from a change of clothes to your laptop. There's also enough air on the back when running, which is an important point when jogging. I also found the system comfortable when hiking. That's why I think the back system is very well done. The backpack is hardly noticeable when hiking and is very comfortable to wear when adjusted correctly. I would also like to highlight the access to the inside via the long zipper. This is the first time I've experienced this with a backpack and it's really worth its weight in gold. You can get to the inside quickly without having to open it at the top. I think the workmanship of the backpack in general is very good, which is why I can't see any negative points at the moment. PS: The last time I was hiking alone, I met three people with the Traverse 30. At least that reaffirmed my decision to buy.

Pro: The backpack is very comfortable to wear and has a good carrying system. I have tested several brands and feel most comfortable in the Ortovox by far (I also have the Traverse 40, which doesn't fit as well as the Traverse 30, but is still good). I tested both backpacks independently of each other on two long-distance hikes, each lasting 10 days. The carrying comfort is consistently good. The weight of 1080g (I weighed it) is also great in this context. The back, shoulder straps and hip belt are very stable, provide support and are comfortable to wear at the same time. Pro: In terms of features, the long zipper is definitely the highlight for me, because it starts right at the top and runs continuously along the side and then a little further to the other side at the bottom. This means that the main compartment can be opened almost completely when the backpack is in front of you. I think that's just brilliant and as far as I know, it's a unique selling point of Ortovox. Once you've tried it in practice, you don't want anything else for loading and unloading. Pro: A rain cover in a separate bottom compartment is useful and placed in the most practical place. It's very well thought out. Cons: I like the fact that the backpack sits directly on my back because it means it sits well. However, compared to other backpacks, you do sweat a bit more and after a while the interior gets damp. If you use stuff sacks, this is only a minor problem, but they then rub off on the interior (which isn't a tragedy). It's a matter of weighing things up: I prefer the good wearing comfort and the weight distribution close to the body and I'm willing to put up with the sweating. Cons: The devices (four straps) for the helmet holder are usable (please leave them), but the helmet holder itself is (for me) superfluous, unfortunately sewn firmly into the bag and takes up space. I mercilessly cut it off and have an extra small outside pocket. Cons: The pocket on the hip belt is too small for (larger) smartphones. This is the biggest weakness because that's where I like to carry my phone and it's the easiest way to take it out for navigation. In practice, this really limited me a lot. It's not well thought out (as with some other manufacturers. I'm surprised that they don't pay attention to this). I had to make do with an extra pocket. Cons: There's only one hip pocket. Dear Ortovox team, please, please rethink the design here and give the successor a second pocket. Then the Traverse would be the perfect backpack (and please don't make any savings when redesigning it that would come at the expense of comfort).

The backpack is very beautiful and comfortable, the only negative note is the mesh of the side pockets, used to store the water bottle, which is breaking after being used for a few days.

I'm pretty disappointed with the quality of the backpack. The material for the water bottle holder on the side is not robust at all and already has holes in it after just a few hikes. That's why the backpack might be OK for hikes on meadows in flatland, but not for alpine tours and definitely not for climbing.

All in all, a great backpack with lots of space and very comfortable to carry. I use it for both mountain climbing and ski touring. My only criticism is that I miss the loop for the ice axe. A question for the Ortovox team: can the loop be retrofitted or are there alternative ways of attaching it?

Piccozze molto compatte ( tldr: I recommend this product only to those who use a hydration system and don't carry technical gear. The side pockets are unusable. The quality and portability are excellent, but the options for accessories leave much to be desired. I already own two other Ortovox backpacks, the Trace 25 and the Haute Route 40, which I find perfect for their specific applications. Since I was looking for a trekking backpack, I immediately purchased the Traverse 30. Perhaps it would have been better if I had looked at it more closely before checking out... A trekking backpack of this size needs to do two things: carry clothes and sustenance. As for clothing, there's nothing to complain about; the large external pocket for a sweater/jacket that you put on and take off frequently is very practical. It's unacceptable for a backpack not to have a pocket for a water bottle. The side pockets are too small for a 1L bottle (you can also see in the image above that the thermos is about to fall out of the pocket). In fact, if the backpack is full, it's difficult to even fit a 0.5L bottle. The pocket's geometry tends to be conical; I've already lost a bottle because, when the backpack is full, it creates a "calipp" effect and things slide upward. When the poles are stowed in their straps and secured with the side buckles, they make the left pocket unusable. If the elastic bands were further back on the backpack and there was a dedicated strap at the top, it would be more convenient. Another annoying flaw is the lack of an ice axe loop. I'm not expecting a system like the Peak, but a simple loop like the Trace would greatly increase versatility. Very compact ice axes (<40 cm) fit inside the flexible pocket; I haven't found a way to hang them on glacier models. The bottom pocket is extremely small; I usually remove the backpack cover and put a poncho inside, but even one of the most compact ones on the market barely fits inside. It would be nice to be able to use this space for something else. Besides the four side buckles, there's no other system for attaching gear to the outside. This means that three of the five sides are unused (except for the helmet holder). 2/5 instead of 1/5 because it actually carries very well and is lightweight. There's nothing to complain about in terms of quality, but I had no doubts about that when I bought Ortovox. I probably should have opted for a Peak, but the minimum size of 35 seemed excessive for a day bag, and I place a lot of importance on weight.
