Light, warm fleece hoody for high alpine activities

Light, technical fleece hoody with merino wool for rock faces and high alpine tours

Highlights

  • Light, warm and comfortable thanks to a technical channel structure on the inside
  • Excellent stretchability
  • Single-layer hood fits under any helmet
  • Merino wool on the inside

On alpine adventures our equipment must be lightweight but also warm and functional. It must function in the valley just as it does during ice cold climbs to the summit.

The FLEECE GRID line is thus the ideal companion in the mountains: Thanks to its inner channel structure, this hooded fleece jacket for men is light but can also trap air and heat through insulating air pockets. A Fleece Light insert in the chest area and double-layered breast pocket provide additional lightweight protection against the wind. During hours of intensive movement, the material composition boasts excellent stretchability and provides ventilation thanks to its inner channel structure. The temperature-regulating properties are supported by fine merino wool on the inside: Tasmanian virgin wool regulates the moisture and temperature levels, is quick drying and has odor neutralizing characteristics.

Merino wool also makes it comfortable to wear. The two breast pockets provide room for storing maps, cell phone or trail bars. The hood provides additional protection against wind and weather.

This grid hoody is perfect. I use a mid-layer hoody year round for all disciplines, and this is the best one I've ever had. The material is incredible. Soft on the inside, durable on the outside. Wicks super well, just the right blend of breathability and wind-block. The hood works well under or over a helmet. The two different sized chest pockets are spot on for keeping the phone warm and other essentials close at hand. The cut stays put when I put up my arms and it fits me perfectly. Every company makes some version of this piece, but none equal the versatility and style of this one. I will be wearing it pretty much every day this winter for ice climbing and ski touring. 145 or 185 baselayer, this grid hoody, the Westalpen softshell, and a Piz Boe for belays is the perfect system for ice climbing and alpinism. One word, INDISPENSABLE.

I had been holding off buying the fleece grid line until Ortovox came out with something that was both full zip and had a hood. I had previously been using the Patagonia R1 with no hood, so when this came out I figured I would give it a go. And I'll never be going back to the R1, the fleece grid hoody fits better and feels better hands down. It fits great as first layer alone, but also under an insulation layer (I have the Piz Boe and Zebru). It's held up well for about 6 months now, with no sign of wear.
