An allrounder for the mountains

Versatile, functional and comfortable year-round mountain backpack

Highlights

  • Optimal load distribution
  • Comfortable, well-ventilated back system
  • Robust and sustainable with recycled polyamide

TRAVERSE backpacks are made for use all year round on summits great and small, although the TRAVERSE 30 is best suited to longer single-day and multi-day tours.

A well-ventilated back system and good load distribution are especially essential in a backpack. Thanks to the ribbed, webbed material and perforated foam in the back pads, the Comfort Contact back system provides excellent air circulation and improved comfort. Ergonomically shaped shoulder straps and a broad hip belt distribute weight evenly across the body.

Even when it comes to technical features, the TRAVERSE 30 has plenty to offer: its main compartment has several sections with enough room for your equipment, while smaller objects can be quickly stowed away in the slot compartment on the front. Your drink bottles will always be close at hand in the elastic side pockets. An integrated helmet net, hiking pole fastening, and stowable material loops at the end of the shoulder straps make the TRAVERSE 30 the optimal companion for alpine terrain. Additional features such as hydration system compatibility, rain cover, hip pocket and holders for items such as sunglasses on the shoulder strap round off this versatile backpack. In the interests of sustainability, 72% of the outer material is now made of recycled polyamide, making the TRAVERSE 30 extremely robust, with the smallest possible ecological footprint. The TRAVERSE 30 is thus the perfect companion for mountain adventures in summer and winter.

I bought the Traverse for hiking - but so far I use the backpack for jogging to and from work. Unexpectedly (actually it's not the purpose of the backpack) it's doing wonderfully. You can store everything from a change of clothes to a laptop. The back is also airy enough when running, which is an important point when jogging. I also found the system to be pleasant when hiking. That's why I think the back system is very successful. The backpack is hardly noticeable when hiking and is very comfortable to wear when adjusted correctly. I would also like to highlight the access to the interior, via the long zipper. This is the first time I've experienced this in a backpack and it really is worth its weight in gold. You can get to the inside quickly without having to open the top. I think the processing of the backpack in general is very successful, which is why I don't currently see any points that I noticed negatively. PS: On the last hike alone, three people came towards me with the Traverse 30. At least that reaffirmed my purchase decision.

Pro: The backpack is very comfortable to wear and has a successful carrying system. I have tested several brands and feel by far the most comfortable in the Ortovox (by the way, I also have the Traverse 40, which doesn't fit as well as the Traverse 30, but still good). I tested both backpacks independently on two long-distance hikes over 10 days each. The wearing comfort is consistently good. The weight of 1080g (which I weighed) is also great in this context. The back, shoulder straps and hip belt are very stable, provide support and are comfortable to wear at the same time. Pro: As far as the features are concerned, for me the long zipper is definitely the highlight because it starts at the top and runs continuously along the side without interruption and then a little further to the other side at the bottom. This means that the main compartment can be opened almost completely when the backpack is in front of you. I think that's simply brilliant and as far as I know, it's a unique selling point for Ortovox. Once you've tried it in practice, you won't want anything else for loading and unloading. Pro: Rain cover in an extra bottom compartment makes sense and is placed in the most practical place. This is very well thought out. Cons: I like that the backpack rests directly on my back because that means it fits well. However, compared to other backpacks, you sweat a little more and after a while the interior becomes damp. If you use packing bags, this is only a limited problem, but they will rub off on the interior (which isn't a tragedy). It's a matter of balancing: I prefer the good wearing comfort and the weight distribution close to the body and I'm willing to sweat for that. Contra: The devices (four tabs) for the helmet holder are usable (please leave them as they are), but the helmet holder itself is unnecessary (for me), unfortunately it is firmly sewn into the bag and takes up space. I cut it off mercilessly and have a small extra pocket for it. Cons: The pocket on the hip belt is too small for (larger) smartphones. This is the biggest weak point because it's where I prefer to carry my phone and it's easiest to take it out to navigate. In practice, this really often limited me. This is not well thought out (as is the case with some other manufacturers. I'm surprised that no attention is paid to this). I had to make do with an extra bag. Cons: There is only one hip pocket. Dear Ortovox team, please, please reconsider the design and give the successor a second bag. Then the Traverse would be the perfect backpack (and when redesigning it, please don't make any savings that would affect carrying comfort).
