Robust, highly functional high alpine touring backpack for alpinists with short backs

The PEAK 42 S is a backpack for Alpine activities that has been adapted especially for mountaineers with a short back – the “S” in the name stands for SHORT. The back system of this backpack is significantly shorter.

This alpine tour backpack is very robust thanks to the use of the extremely tear and abrasion resistant material Nylon 420D Manstar. The broad, padded shoulder and hip straps distribute the weight of the load evenly between the shoulders and hips, ensuring a high level of wear comfort. A circumferential front zipper enables direct access to the main compartment. The PEAK 42 S also scores highly with a separate safety compartment, attachment options for rope, ice axe and crampons, as well as a separate map compartment and a hip pocket. This backpack is also hydration system compatible and includes images of Alpine emergency signals.

What makes this backpack so special is the back system made from pressed Swiss wool. As with the clothing, mountaineers benefit from the wool’s unique moisture and microclimate management, making it feel comfortable and dry on the back. Thanks to the wool, the back of the backpack can absorb almost 30 times more moisture than a comparable back made from foam and is almost 7 % more breathable. A further advantage of wool is that the surface of the back system dries faster. The full contact back fits closely to the body and offers optimum weight distribution. The back design consists of two aluminum struts that offer high stability and guarantee great comfort, even when the backpack is heavily loaded.

Love this pack! In my search for a new touring pack, I was looking for something that had a simple and low profile design made with high quality, durable material. This pack was exactly what I was looking for. It is a great size for longer day tours, and the rescue equipment compartment makes it easy to stay organized. I also really like that the zipper runs the full length of the pack so getting to things at the bottom of your pack is much easier.

Very pro pack! It is not great only for mountaineering. It´s fantastic for hiking too. There are many technical features which come in handy hikers too. The helmet mesh is perfect place for jacket or drinking bottle for instance. The carrying system is clever. I have serious problem with my back and this is the best backpack for me. There were no problems to carry equipments in my five days hike in fells. I'm very happy about my Peak 42S. Thank you Ortovox!

This is hands down the most comfortable pack I have ever skied in. I have a short torso but am tall so it has always been a challenge for me to find a good fit. There is plenty of space for all of my gear and is my go to choice when teaching in the backcountry because there is enough room for additional group supplies and the separate safety gear pocket allows for a 300cm probe. I like that I have an option to add water bladder and the tiny pockets on the waist belt are perfect for uphill snack stashing! Skis are easy to attach and the zipper design to access main compartment means I do not have to dig around in the pack looking for gear. I do not sweat or overheat on my back with this pack like I do with others. Highly recommend for long tours or people that need to take lots of gear into the field.

So much storage. Compartments everywhere. Great frame and superb load balancing, even when carrying my splitboard in A-frame. Only complaint? Product video or documentation that shows all the compartments and hidden features (like the helmet mesh).
A shorter pack that feels way bigger...
