AVALANCHES

UNSTOPPABLE FORCES

Boundaries are often crossed abruptly. Within seconds, loose powder can develop overpowering force and crash down into the valley. Now it’s down to you, the rescuer. Buried parties statistically have a good chance of surviving for 15 minutes, after which survival chances decrease rapidly. The rescuers must practice every action as well as the coordination of the team’s actions until they become second nature. You have to be versed in the use of the avalanche transceiver, know how to locate the buried parties quickly and be able to shovel effectively! In this chapter, you will learn everything about emergency situations, the snowpack and what’s underneath it! Watch the Avalanches tutorial!

HOW TO SEARCH CORRECTLY

Pumped up with adrenaline, your pulse racing, it’s difficult to think clearly at first. What was that number I should call? How do I brief the helicopter team properly? Or what are the official emergency signals? We’ve compiled these facts in a handy pocketbook format for easy printout so you can refer to them in an emergency!

PINPOINTING BURIED PARTIES

A simple system and a little experience are important for locating buried parties quickly with the probe. However, there are also a few basics that help make the task easier.

Find out the fastest way to locate buried parties!

THE FASTEST WAY TO SHOVEL

Of the three disciplines of transceiver searching, probing, and shoveling, it’s often shoveling that takes up the most time. For the average burial depth of 0.5m, a good 1.5 square meters of snow has to be moved.

We show you how to shovel efficiently using the right strategy as well as the clearing function!
