Since 1980, ASI has offered Avalanche and Snow Safety courses to increase the knowledge and awareness of recreational skiers and climbers as well as professionals needing the skills to meet industry standards. The ASI Avalanche Training Center is on the forefront of new directions in avalanche education by integrating internationally accepted curriculum that address the needs of a variety of different snow climates, not just regional ones. The new curriculum has been designed to develop judgment in decision making based on the knowledge and experience level of the individuals involved.
As these skills develop, situational intelligence can be greater applied by the decision maker. The curriculum meets guidelines that have been collectively developed through American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education and also meets suggested guidelines of American Avalanche Association. All courses require over-snow transport ability with skis and skins, snowshoes or snowboard (split-board with skins or snowshoes). All courses are taught by certified, professional Mountain Guides, Ski Resort Forecasters or other highly experienced AIARE qualified Instructors who have been actively making stability evaluation, hazard assessment and route finding decisions in the backcountry. 2005/06' Instructors include Bela G. Vadasz, Tom Carter, Bill Seline, Geoffe Clark, Peter Leh and others. All programs include the use of Ortovox avalanche safety equipment.
